WEEK 10, DAY 3: I HATE ELASTIC LACES and 1009 calories burned?!!

First I tried Bungee Laces and now Easy Laces. That's it!! I'm over them! I don't care how much time they save me in transition! From now on I'm tying the damn things!

I have really wide feet and they both hurt the wide part of my feet like CRAZY. I did my 7-miler (plus 1-mile warmup) this morning in them, to see how the adjustments I used during the last race were working, and to see if I could go the full race distance in them. When I got done, I could barely walk and had to sit around with the sides of my feet on an ice pack for an hour. Between peeing twice and wearing those stupid things, I was slow as molasses. My average pace was 13:33/mile. Took me about 1 hr and 45 minutes to go 8 miles. (The pace for my 7 miles sans warm-up mile was 12:08 per mile).

But hey - what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger, right? I made it through 8 miles of torture and lived to tell the tale.

Tomorrow morning I have my PT eval - YAY! So I won't do a strength/flex session because that will count as one. Tonight I'm doing swim drills with my new paddles. I'm very excited because my swim stroke needs all the help it can get. I think a Masters team swims tonight but I'll find out when I get there and I'll be able to grab the Masters schedule at the same time.

In other news, calories. I did write down the calories-needed-per-hour rule wrong - that's why I thought I only needed 100. Now, I know the Nike+ kit is not that accurate, but I have finite finances to spend on toys and I just shelled out for a carbon road bike, so the Garmin will have to wait until after Hammerhead. I use a combo of the GPS in my car and the Nike+ kit to track my mileage. In any case, it told me I burned 1009 calories in this morning's 8 miles. COME ON, that CAN'T be right!!!?? Most of the charts I've consulted say someone my weight burns about 500 calories per hour at a 12 min/mile and I was only out 1.75 hrs. Nice thought, though!

I got a Garmin 301 for Christmas this past year and was soooo excited to use it.

And I did, religiously for a while. But I don't use it all the time anymore. In fact, I kind of use it for only about a third of my training. There are a bunch of reasons, but don't worry that you're missing out on a TON of stuff without one. Most of the time it's just me and my swim watch.

Also, I'm addicted to gmap-pedometer and the beginner triathlete route tracker for my mileage and elevation change. They're pretty accurate and can give you some of the info a Garmin would.

Later gater!

I'm with you on the quick elastic laces. I went back to the tried and true lace em' up kind, too. The elastic ones saved me, oh 3 seconds in transition. Only in my dreams does 3 seconds secure me a stand at the podium at the end of the race.

Keep up the good work!
